Update 5 – Zebrastraat, Ghent

Installation, work in situ on a underground parking lot +/- 25000 x 30000 cm

Materials, slides projected on black wooden maquettes and a lightbox 18000 cm

The world (dis)appearing on level -3 is an installation that consists of a series of models with slide projctions and a light box. It presents an installation made with a technology on the verge of extention, namely slides.

This work started around a now demolished apartment building in the social housing area ‘Luchtbal’ in the north of Antwerp. Pictures of the interriors and the remains of the building were taken using perhaps one of thr last films of Kodak, a multinational company which now also no longer exists. The missing tactile spots go on living on a carrier which is on the verge of disappearing completely.

Together with the images of the remaining previous occupants a new associative reality is formed. What kind of memories of their residence remains in the minds of these last residents?

The pictures of the empty spaces were taken in the same way as the eye is scanning them. No selections were made during the schooting. This results in a system with slides that has a strong resemblance to a movie playing in slow motion.

The slides are projected in stylised models that are copies of the empty rooms in the apartment.

A narrow lightbox of 18 meter shows a strip representing a continious walk through the building.
